We didn't get the BMW. The guy wouldn't come down to the price my dad wanted, and the car had a few more issues than originally noted. Namely the ABS and Air Bag lights, and a small oil leak.

But, if the guy decides to come down to $1800, we're still buying it. If not, we're moving on.

If we do move on, the car search for me is in full swing. We've been looking all night at cars. Anything from more E36s to Cobalts to TL Type-S's. I found a '91 Prelude Si I quite like: black with a 5-speed.

But, BMW is still the target here and we've been scouring forums for cars for sale as well. Apparently my dad is willing to travel a bit for one. If we can't find one in a timely fashion, or if I find something I like better, we'll buy that. But for now any 90s BMW basically.

crazy suggestion: get a Datsun 280z.

Real suggestion: keep looking for an E36. $4k is a good budget, maybe even an M3 if you are patient.

You should consider the P11 Infiniti G20. A nice sports sedan with luxury and prestige (and if you're lucky, heated seats)

That's a damn shame. I have to say, your dad sounds a lot more awesome than mine, though. My dad, and my mom, abhors the thought of a used car, let alone one from the 1990s. They were...a little too happy to see the e38 go, even though they bought it new.

This is not as good of a deal as you think it is. If you're buying an E36, there's absolutely no reason not to get a 6-cylinder.

Shit, I bought a V8 E34 with 50k less miles for half that money.

My dad bought one of that era 328i back a couple years ago. It was silver. From a friend, it apparently had more issues than what he told us, windshield replaced with one that wasn't OEM, huge oil and coolant leak.

tl;dr It was so bad that my dad swore he'd never get another German car and Carmax wouldn't even take it, and we traded it in towards a lease on our Lexus GX.
